The Lymington Yeomanry cavalry squadron was raised in order to combat the lawless conduct of labourers within the area of the New Forest around 1831. Around 2,000 labourers were terrorizing residents within the New Forest area with robberies and extortion. The Lymington cavalry is thought to have numbered only around 50 troopers however they were well armed and managed to stop the depredations arresting many of the leaders who were tried and capitally convicted.
