§ Roger Hampson (British 1925-1996)
"Deep Navigation Mine"

Signed, titled on verso, oil on board.

Dimensions: 44.5cm x 60cm (17.5in x 23.5in)

* This painting is of the Deep Navigation Colliery, near Merthyr in Wales. When opened, it was the deepest coalmine in South Wales and because of the quality of its coal it provided the fuel to the RMS Lusitania in its attempt at the Blue Riband, the fastest transatlantic crossing. The Lusitania is unfortunately more famous for its sinking in 1915 by a German U-Boat, an incident that changed public opinion in the USA in favour of intervention in World War I. The mine itself was closed in 1991, and the site is now a park.

Artists’ Resale Right (“droit de suite”) may apply to this lot.
