Belgian copy of a French M1840 .69 calibre rifle musket, by Tanner & Cie Liege, 40.5inch barrel with folding ladder sight secured by three bands, four groove rifling, the stock with numerous stamps and pencil mark to the inside.
Many of these rifles were imported at the beginning of the American Civil War by the Union army. There is a pencil inscription to the barrel channel that reads ' MB Wright Traverse City Mich. Dec. 8th 1894. FC.L.J. Co K. 26th Mich'. This perhaps indicates that the rifle was used as a parade arm late in the 19th century by the Grand Army of the Republic, a large fraternity made up of Union Civil War veterans.
Section 58 (2) Antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18, age verification will be required if the lot is to be posted out.
Dimensions: 142cm long
