Collection of photographs, documents, patents and ephemera relating to John Standfield (1838-1890)

Collection of photographs, documents, patents and ephemera relating to the Standfield family, most notably John Standfield (1838-1890) of Standfield and Clark Engineering company, Grays, Essex who specialised in repairing ships using floating-type dry docks and development of floating docks. Josiah Latimer Clark of Standfield and Clarke was the brother of Edwin Clark who is remembered principally as the designer of the Anderton Boat Lift. Included in the lot is a book of patents relating to hydraulics, floating docks/pontoons, towing apparatus, examining and raining sunken ships and more. The articles of partnership for Standfield & Clarke, 1881. Mounted photographs of floating docks and other shipping related images in England and India which is most likely Bombay, as Mr Standfield was resident engineer for Edwin Clark‘s hydraulic lift graving-dock at Hog Island. A paper of Floating Docks read before The Society of Engineers on 2nd May 1881 by John Standfield. Three copies of a pamphlet produced to explain the raising of the S.S. Austral which sank while coaling in Sydney Harbour in 1882. An album of photographs from the turn of the 20th century belonging to John's son Frank, of various steamers, yachts and tourist attractions. Three school photos of Frank Standfield at school in Paris at the collège-lycée Jean-Baptiste-Say in 1881, 1882 and 1883. The catalogue for the sale of Grays Engineering Works in June 1900.
