Sometimes size does matter! 4 bores are some of the largest shoulder-fired weapons available and this mammoth calibre is seldom seen but our 18th June Arms and Militaria auction contains two!

 

Army and Navy 4 bore Shotgun

Army and Navy 4 Bore

The first, shown above as lot 60 is an Army and Navy 4 bore single barrel shotgun, serial number 13357, circa 1892. The shotgun has a 41.5" Birmingham Nitro proofed barrel engraved 'Army and Navy C.S.L. London', it has a chequered figured stock with horn capped pistol grip and forend, the shotgun comes with a hard case, ten loaded cartridges and slipcase, it is estimated at £5,000 - 7,000 and is attracting a lot of interest.

Arthur Smith 4 bore rifle

 

Arthur Smith 4 Bore 

The second is an Arthur Smith cased 4 bore muzzle loading rifle, serial number 007. The 30" round browned barrel has three groove rifling to take a mechanical fit three-lug bullet. It is fitted with fixed sights and engraved A. Smith Boxted Colchester, the case hardened lock also engraved A.R. Smith is fitted into a chequered half stock, with sling loop. The rifle is complete with oak case with brass corners, together with outer grey painted slipcase, the inner case green baize lined, containing loading/cleaning rod with jags, bullet mould, two nipple keys. This unusual beast is estimated at £500 - 1,000.
