Highlights From Our Recent Sale
Our Fine & Classic furniture auction on Thursday 14th January has a large range of antique furniture and furnishings ideal for your country home. Now more than ever people are spending most of their lives in their home so it seems appropriate to return to the famous quote by William Morris:
‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’
Beauty, in many ways, is subjective so to that end Robert Stones and Harry Pickup have chosen a number of notable lots in next week’s sale that take their fancy.
First up is lot 460, a George III oak dresser base estimated at £800-£1,200. There are several dressers in our Fine & Classic auction however, what sets this apart from the rest is the beautiful pollard oak and walnut veneer to the front. The rich colour of the wood partnered with the original brass handles really catches the eye and would be a great addition to any home. In many ways, it is the embodiment of the William Morris quote as it finds the sweet spot between beauty and utility with all the available storage space.
Next is lot 401, a mid-19th Century French walnut veneered bureau plat estimated at £500-£800. This piece is stamped ‘Edwards and Roberts, Wardour Street’ a London establishment founded in 1845 which was well known for providing with high-quality furniture. Although this bureau plat has a slightly odd drawer arrangement is a wonderfully ornate piece of furniture with walnut veneer and ormolu moulding to the legs.
Lot 438 is a late 19th Century hardwood military chest estimated at £500-£800. The chest is constructed from two sections with the top drawer containing a secretaire. Military chests are performing well at the moment, achieving good prices due to their look and versatility. Lot 436 is a 17th Century iron armada chest estimated at £500-£800. This impressive item is fully operational with the original spring lock mechanism in the lid. Unfortunately, the interior decorative plate that would usually be covering the locking mechanism is missing however the mechanism in itself is a piece of art. This would make a great decorative item in any home and could even be used as storage for anything such as board games, Christmas decorations or even some spare doubloons.
Finally, is lot 466, a Regency mahogany wine cooler. This rather regal solution to your alcohol storage needs is estimated at £200-£300. The wine cooler, otherwise known as a cellarette is of sarcophagus shape with four paw feet on articulated casters and a decorative lion mask ring handle.
