Silver Stirrup Cups

In our October 19th Sale

Selling on 19th October are four fantastic stirrup cups. Accrued over a number of years by a local collector, these impressive silver stirrup cups are part of a fantastic Single Owner Collection of important silver.

Dating from 1773 to 1817, these remarkable stirrup cups span the time period in which these cups were at the height of their popularity. Designed to be handed to huntsmen before their rides and whilst in the saddle, hence the name 'stirrup cup.' Varying in designs, stirrup cups can be found in a variety of designs related to the hunt - hounds, stags, boots and fox heads.

This collection of fox head stirrup cups displays a range of wonderful expressions and styles by silversmiths John Harris, John Lautier, Henry Chawner, Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson. Each realistically formed, these beautifully crafted stirrup cups form just one aspect of a truly remarkable silver collection. Including opulent silver gilt and gilt lined examples, these ‘parting cups’ are in remarkable condition for their age and usage.

The Single Owner Collection of silver will sell on Thursday 19th October, commencing at 2pm. For further information on the collection, or any of the lots in the sale, contact us via auctions@wilson55.com
