Asian Art

Asian art features as a dedicated section in our Fine & Classic auctions, held quarterly, and we offer a free valuation on items considered for sale. Our sales cover Chinese porcelain, jades and metalwork, alongside Meiji period cloisonné, lacquer and Satsuma earthenwares from Japan.

Asian art covers a diverse range of styles from across Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. The market has been shaped in recent years by the sums Chinese collectors pay to repatriate historical art, which makes it worth reassessing Chinese jades, porcelain, silver, metalwork and furniture held in family collections.

Demand for Japanese works of art has not returned to the highs of the early 1990s, but high-quality Meiji period cloisonné, lacquer, okimono carvings and Satsuma earthenwares continue to perform well. In 2014 we sold a Qianlong (1736–95) mark and period doucai 'lotus and bats' jar and cover for a record £350,000; the piece had been brought back from China by a Liverpool shipping merchant and was offered by his Shropshire descendant.
