Peter Brook Artist Overview

Peter Brook was born in Scholes, West Yorkshire in the winter of 1927 to farmer parents. Life on the farm and surrounding landscapes is a major theme running through many of his paintings. Brook was educated at Goldsmith's College where he trained to become a teacher before returning to West Yorkshire. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1962.

Peter Brook’s paintings are instantly recognisable and often feature the bleak, wintry moorland landscapes of the Pennines, Yorkshire, and Scotland. The bleakness of these landscapes is often tempered by the beauty of sunset and sunrise. There are also his trademark man and dog motifs, together with the occasional wandering sheep appearing in a scene. Brook had a succession of dogs, all border collies - there was Bob, Tip, Tess and Shep, his last, who is often seen in his paintings, with unique chevron markings on his back.
