Often hailed ‘the Picasso of watches,’ Gérald Genta’s legacy on the world of watch design is unmatched.
Designing more than 100,000 during his lifetime, Genta was responsible for several iconic and sought after timepieces, for the best watchmakers in the world to include IWC, Omega, Universal Genève, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.
Starting his career at Universal Genève, Genta designed the brand’s Polerouter Microtors. This experience would form the foundation for many collaborations with other brands in Switzerland.
One of Genta’s most famed designs was the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet. Inspired by dive helmets and featuring an integrated bracelet, this watch remains one of the most sought-after watches in retail as well as in the auction sphere.
Genta’s design hallmarks are distinctive, and seen also in the Constellation, designed for Omega in 1959.
Another of Genta’s triumphs was the design for the Nautilus for Patek Philippe in 1976. Charged with designing a sports watch with exceptional finishes, the Nautilus helped to refresh the brand and remains one of the brand’s most popular models.
Following great success designing for the biggest watchmakers, Genta launched his eponymous brand in 1969. The automatic perpetual calendar, the ultra-thin minute repeater, the Gefica Safari, the Disney watches, the Success collection, and the Sonnerie watches all command fantastic prices at auction.
