Possibly one of the finest examples of modern gunsmithing has just arrived at our salerooms for sale on the 9th September 2021. This fabulous beast is a Krieghoff Neptun Primus Drilling combination gun. The firearm combines two side by side 12 bore shotgun barrels with a 30-06 rifled barrel underneath. The gun is fitted with a Swarovski Habicht 1.25 -4 x 24 scope with covers, held in place by factory-made Krieghoff mounts. There are also open sights fitted to the 25 inch Bohler Antinit-steel barrels which include a fixed front sight and single leaf folding rear sight that lifts and retracts automatically when the barrel selector catch, located next to the safety catch is operated.
No expense has been spared on this drilling and the sidelock actions are fabulously engraved with deer and stag to the left side and a gun dog and hare to the right, they are surrounded with elaborate scrollwork borders. The gun has a figured pistol grip stock and forend that have been relief carved with oak leaves and acorns surrounding the chequered panels. The butt stock has had additional carvings added including wild boar behind the raised cheek piece and a gun dog with mallards in flight to the right side.
Traditionally, German hunting rifles and shotguns are often fitted with horn trigger guards. This anachronistic practice is a loved and disliked equally in different shooting circles. Whilst horn guards can add an interesting dimension to a firearm they are also very fragile and the practicality is questionable. When the current owner sent the gun back to the factory to have the scope mounts made and fitted, the original horn trigger guard was damaged in transit. Krieghoff subsequently fitted and engraved the blued steel trigger guard as a present on the gun today which presents more practical solution, just as attractive as the original.
Krieghoff is a household name worldwide for producing the best of the best and traces its routes back to 1886 where it was founded by the partnership of Sempert and Krieghoff in the town of Ulm. The company enjoys a strong following in the UK and Europe but is especially loved in America where the brand is hugely admired.
