Coins and Banknotes

We hold three specialist coin auctions each year and offer a free valuation on items consigned for sale. Our auctions cover ancient Greek and Roman coins, gold guineas, half-sovereigns, banknotes, tokens and medallions.

Our coin valuations department is respected by numismatic collectors in the UK and internationally. We handle coins ranging from ancient Greek and Roman pieces to modern currency, including banknotes, tokens and medallions.

A coin's value is influenced by its rarity, historical significance and condition. Not every coin is a candidate for auction: old 50p pieces and many recent special-edition coins were released in large numbers, and tend not to hold significant value.

Gold guinea coins, by contrast, achieve higher prices because of their scarcity and historical importance.

Coins and banknotes FAQs

A coin's value is largely determined by collector demand, alongside rarity, historical significance and condition. Highly sought-after coins can achieve premium prices, while those with less demand may not be worth consigning. If you are uncertain, our team can provide a valuation and advise whether your coins are suited to auction.
Our valuations are free. You can value your coins in three ways: by completing our online valuation form, by sending details via WhatsApp, or by arranging an appointment or home visit. A specialist will review your items and give you an assessment of their likely auction value.
We sell coins ranging from ancient Greek and Roman pieces to modern currency, including banknotes, tokens and medallions. We hold three specialist coin auctions each year.
Valuations are free and there is no fee if your item does not sell. We charge commission only on a successful sale.
Often not. Many recent special-edition coins and old 50p pieces were issued in large numbers, and large circulation tends to suppress value. Ancient coins, gold guineas and early gold sovereigns are more likely to attract collector demand. If in doubt, send us images and we will tell you.
