ARTHUR TUCKER

Born in Bristol in 1864, the son of the artist Edward Tucker, Arthur Tucker moved to the Lake District and spent most of his life there. He was one of five children, and his father taught Arthur and his four brothers Edward, Alfred Robert, Hubert and Fredrick to paint. Although all the brothers were artistic the best known are Arthur and his brother Hubert Coutts Tucker. In 1898 he became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and was a founder member of the Lake Artists’ Society in 1904, later becoming Vice President. Arthur specialised in watercolours, mostly of the Lake District but also of Wales and Yorkshire, and in 1911, London publishers Chatto and Windus published Wordsworthshire (an introduction to a poet’s country) by Eric Robertson - the book contains 47 illustrations by Arthur Tucker. Tucker first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887, and continued to do so with increasing regularity until 1919. He lived at Windermere until his death in 1929.

Arthur Tucker was an accomplished watercolour artist and his work remains sought after by collectors. He specialised in smaller watercolour paintings, which have remained more affordable to a wider audience than the large oil paintings of other contemporary landscape artists. His paintings are in the collections of leading art galleries such as the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery and are always popular at auction.

The value of Arthur Tucker’s work varies a little according to the size and subject matter.
