Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) autographed letter written from The Balaclava General Hospital dated May 20 / 56 the four sides of script informing the father of Howell Evans; Gunner and Driver of No.1 Company 12th Battalion Royal Artillery, that his son was struck off the Army register on June 29th 1855 having been recorded as missing since February 6th 1855. The letter expresses Nightingales fears that Howell Evans may perished during the 'fearful' winter of 1855 or may have deserted. Together with an addressed envelope with black wax seal, (the single sheet of paper in two pieces torn through a horizontal fold line, damages and losses to the envelope). (2)
