An 18ct gold full hunter pocket watch, the enamel dial with roman numeral hour markers and subsidiary seconds dial to 6, keyless movement numbered 14614, within an 18ct gold case bearing hallmarks for Chester, 1901, inner plate with inscription reading 'Presented to C. Grant Esq. R. M. By Members Bethulie Town Guard in token of esteem and respect 1st Oct 1900 to 7th June 1902' and outer case bearing Grant family crest to front and monogram to reverse, case diameter 52mm, gross weight 126.7g.

Boer War interest: The Second Boer War took broke out in 1899. In 1900, British troops advanced on Bethulie and a Concentration Camp in the town was established on 22nd April 1901, principally as an overflow camp from the Springfontein camp. At first, the camp was unfenced and unguarded but following a number of absconding inmates, a perimeter was placed around the town formed by the Town Guard. During the course of the Second Boer War over 1700 women and children died at Bethulie. The camp was eventually closed officially on 10 January 1903. This pocket watch was presented to C. Grant as a token from the Bethulie Town Guard, dated in between 1900 and 1902. It is highly likely, therefore, that C.M Grant was involved with the running of the Bethulie Camp.
