* This important early work by Valette has remained unseen in public since it appeared in the Adolphe Valette Exhibition at the Manchester City Art Gallery in 1976. This exhibition was the first extensive exhibition of works by the artist (deceased in 1942) after World War Two. A photograph of the painting existed, however it was not published in the exhibition catalogue. The Manchester City Art Gallery did not put all the photos of all the works in the catalogue, nevertheless they kept the photos in their archives, which is now shown in the additional images for this lot. The original lender was John Lamming, a friend of Madame Andrée Valette in Jersey, to whom she left her estate. Then, after the death of John Lamming, the work passed on to Colin Warburton, who himself was a friend of John Lamming. Therefore, the gold sticky label on verso with the name E.C. Warburton and his London address has been put on top of the name John Lamming.
