* Born in Stockport in 1926, Peter Shaw studied art at Stockport College, and was taught by the artist and critic, Emmanuel “Manny” Levy. Peter subsequently attended the Manchester School of Art, graduating in 1963. So impressed was Manny Levy, that following Peter’s graduation he was offered the position as art teacher at Stockport College, taking over the role from his former teacher. Peter Shaw is best known for his gritty northern landscapes. He spent much of his time with his wife, Gillian, in their cottage on the edge of Matley Moor in Derbyshire, and on trips to Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland. Peter died relatively young in 1982. A major retrospective was held at Stockport Art Gallery in the Summer of 1983, where some 160 paintings were exhibited, from all parts of the UK. His work can be found in several public collections, including the Stockport Art Gallery.
