Major The Honourable Herbrand Alexander 5th Lancers Dress Jacket, waist coat and trousers.

Major The Honourable Herbrand Alexander 5th Lancers Dress Jacket, waist coat and trousers, name label to inside.

The Honourable Herbrand Alexander (b.1888 - d1965) joined the 5th Lancers in 1904 and was the only one of four brothers to serve in WW1 and survive. He was awarded the D.S.O in 1915. Promoted to captain in 1914 and acted as temporary commanding officer during parts of 1918. Alexander led the Irish Regiment in the 'Re-entry into Mons' on the morning of the 11th November 1918 narrowly missing a shell which exploded near him one hour before Armistice. In August 1914 Alexander came very close to capture whilst on orders to hold the village of Remigny north of the St. Quentin Canal, and push forward patrols. All bridges across the canal were destroyed except for a footbridge, three messengers were sent to inform Alexander he was in danger of being surrounded, he managed to successfully lead his men back to the squadron lines and avoid capture despite being surrounded by Uhlans.

During WWII he was promoted to Lieutenant - Colonel and served as aide to the exiled King of Norway. Outside his military career Alexander trained and raced race horses becoming champion Irish amateur jockey in 1922. His horse-racing exploits earn't him the name 'Firebrand' which is the title of his memoirs compiled by Alexander's granddaughter Lady Jane Alexander which describes many interesting details of his military service.
