Japanese chinoiserie box with engraved interior lining.
Japanese chinoiserie box or tea caddy, the black lacquered body with gilded decoration depicting tableaus of daily life in a village. The hinged lid opens to reveal a symmetrical gilded wheatsheaf motif above an internal engraved metal lid for the inner metal caddy liner. There are two swan neck handles to either end of the caddy, the box is missng its lock and escutcheon.
