Claude Harrison, Winners & Losers, oil.

Claude Harrison A.R.C.A., R.P. (British, 1922-2009), Winners & Losers, signed and dated '04, titled on verso, oil on board, 31.5 x 34cm.; 12.5 x 13.5in. * Claude Harrison`s paintings evoke a deeply mysterious world. His imaginative figurative compositions draw on the Commedia dell`Arte and often places figures in surreal landscapes of his own choosing. He often took his figures from sketches produced whilst watching Top of the Pops, with the sound turned down! Often his paintings of Commedia dell`Arte figures contain a hint of menace - he called them conversation pieces or conceits. The moment caught is transitory - in a moment they will be gone. Claude Harrison studied at the Royal College of Art in 1948, where he was influenced by the Neo-Romantics and his teacher, John Minton. Artists' Resale Right (droit de suite) may apply to this lot.
