§ George Hooper (British 1910-1994)
"The Artist's Garden"

Signed and dated '69, acrylic on paper.

Dimensions: 75cm x 53.5cm (29.5in x 21in)

Born in India, Hooper studied at the Royal College of Art where he won a Rome scholarship in painting. During the war he was an air raid warden and recorded his experiences. He was also employed as an artist in the "Recording Britain" campaign mounted to paint all the country`s important buildings, as it was feared many would be destroyed in the Blitz. After the war George`s work moved towards Fauvism with bright oils and distorted views. Elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, he was nevertheless largely unrecognised outside artistic circles in his lifetime. However, since his death, there has been a reappraisal of his work combined with a number of exhibitions leading to a much larger audience of admirers and collectors. His work is in the British Museum, the V&A, and in several galleries in Sussex and Hull.
