This broadside celebrates the actions of Richard Pendrill and his four brothers George, Humphrey, John, and William by helping Charles II to escape to France following the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Pendrill also known as 'Trusty Dick' famously disguised the king as a land worker, giving him a short haircut and lending him some of his clothes. King Charles II was hidden in an oak tree (referenced in the central crest of the engraving) whilst Cromwell's soldiers searched for him. Following the restoration of the Monarch, Pendrill was richly rewarded for his services. In 1739 King George II ordered the tomb of Richard Pendrill to be cleaned up and beautified, this act also being referenced in the broadside.
