* James Longueville was born in 1942 near Chester. Following a career in journalism, he started to paint professionally in 1972, concentrating on the landscape around his South Cheshire studio. Working in oil, pastel and watercolour, his work is traditionally figurative, influenced by a long line of exponents in European Landscape painting from Boudin, Constable and the East Anglian School to Wilson Steer, Seago and others. He learned much from the fine North country artist Angus Rands. He successfully captures colour, light and atmosphere in his paintings. Being interested in, and/or excited by, his subject is of paramount importance to him - he is fascinated by light and its interaction with colour and activity. He paints daily and travels in England, Ireland, France and Italy always looking for new material. His work hangs in public and private collections as well as in significant corporate collections in this country and abroad. He has won twice the Patterson Pastel Award at the Pastel Society. He was awarded the John White Memorial Prize at Patterson’s Venice in Peril Exhibition 2010. He has exhibited regularly at the Mall Galleries London, and with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Oil Painters. He is a highly regarded senior member of the Pastel Society to which he was elected in 1983. He has shown in the Royal Academy and exhibits with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, a full member of which society he was elected in 1989. All his work passes through Sarah Samuels Fine Paintings before going to galleries in London, Norfolk and Suffolk where his work is also regularly exhibited.
