Naval General Service medal 1793-1840 for Robert Melliphant, with Trafalgar clasp.
Robert Melliphant joined the H.M.S. Sovereign on the 15th July 1803 and served as Landsman during the Battle of Trafalgar 1805. The Royal Sovereign carried the Flag of the Second in Command Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, with Edward Rotheram as Captain and led the Lee Column at Trafalgar. During the fighting the sovereign covered herself with great distinction, for some time engaging several enemy ships single-handedly before tackling Alava's flagship the Santa Ana. Her losses on this occasion amounted to 144 including 14 officers killed or wounded.
