US Springfield Pattern M1842 rifled musket, 42inch barrel with progressive depth rifling, secured by three bands, the lock dated 1850 repeated in faint text on the barrel tang, faint inspectors cartouche to stock.
M1842 muskets were originally smoothbore but many were upgraded prior to the US Civil War. 23,683 were fitted with sights, whereas 20,076 were rifled but no rear sights fitted as with this example. See G. Moller 'American Military Shoulder Arms' volume 3 pp 189-200 for more information.
