A maritime journal written in July 1844 by Mr Alex Gladstone containing extracts from a journal he kept aboard the Medora on her voyage to the island of Trinidad, leaving the Port of Glasgow 18th November 1843 and arriving in the Port of Spain 23rd January 1844. The journal follows a Scottish gentleman on his emigration to Trinidad in the winter of 1843 on the Medora, travelling via Rothesay and Bay of Biscay, the Azores Islands through to the Port of Spain on a voyage spanning over 66 days. It provides a detailed account of life on board the vessel, the extreme weather they faced, sailing troubles throughout the voyage as well as the continued accounts of the health of the passengers and Mr Gladstone's attempts at homeopathic remedies to improve their health. Small journal with black covering (possibly calf skin), measuring 12.25 x 8cm, 5 x 3in. Condition Report: Some minor tears and creases to the edges of the endpapers and earlier pages and some spots of foxing, stains and yellowing to the pages throughout the journal. The binding is slightly loose and the book covers have surface scuffs and abrasions commensurate with age.
