Two portrait miniatures one of Commander George Bague Royal Navy, the other Admiral Richard Crozier as a young Midshipman, painted on ivory set within gilded frames and mounted in a presentation box, accompanied by photocopies of the Royal United Services Museum collection dispersal sale 1962 catalogue, which featured these miniatures and other research compiled by the vendor.

The museum paperwork and annotation on the reverse of both miniatures state that both portraits depict George Bague. We are indebted to another Miniatures collector who has been kind enough to inform us that he owns another identical miniature to the one on the left of our main illustration. His miniature was acquired from descendants of the Crozier family, the reverse of which states it is of Richard Crozier aged 17 as a Midshipman and was painted in Naples September 1820.

George Bague entered the Royal Navy on the 15th June 1798. He served onboard the Haerlem, African, and Success. He was onboard the Colossus and participated in the blockade of Cadiz and then Trafalgar 1805 where he was wounded. Bague saw further action in the Mediterranean while commanding the boats of the HMS Bittern. He was promoted to commander in 1837 and retired from active service in 1851.

Ivory declaration number DLGS4WSZ and UKC6WAED

Dimensions: The miniatures mesure 6.5cm and 5.8cm high, the box measures 21cm wide.

Originally part of the Royal United Services Museum collection, donated to the museum in 1924 by Miss F. Crosbie. Sold as part of the dispersal sale of 1962.
