'When acting as a company runner he volunteered to go back and bring in an officer who had been left behind with a badly broken leg. In spite of a cross fire from hostile machine guns and a heavy rifle fire at close range, he succeeded in bringing this officer away. He displayed the greatest courage and gallantry.
