James McCabe (1748–1811) was one of the most celebrated clockmakers of the 18th and 19th centuries, renowned for his craftsmanship, precision, and innovative designs. Originally from Lurgan, Ireland, McCabe moved to London in 1775, establishing a prestigious business that became synonymous with high-quality timepieces.
McCabe’s reputation for excellence earned him an elite clientele, including Lord Horatio Nelson and President George Washington, who acquired a McCabe pocket watch in 1793. His workshop in Fleet Street, later relocated to the Royal Exchange in 1804, produced over 50,000 watches, 7,000 clocks, and 500 marine chronometers, cementing his place in horological history.
Following his death in 1811, his sons continued the family business, ensuring the McCabe name remained a mark of prestige until 1883.
McCabe’s timepieces, including bracket clocks, longcase clocks, and precision marine chronometers, are prized by collectors worldwide. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or new to antique clocks, bidding on a James McCabe masterpiece is an opportunity to own a piece of horological history.
