Samuel Watson (c. 1635–1710) was one of England’s most distinguished clockmakers, famed for his intricate astronomical clocks and innovative designs. With commissions from royalty and leading scientists of his era, Watson’s timepieces remain highly prized by collectors today.
Watson’s craftsmanship attracted the patronage of King Charles II, for whom he created a remarkable astronomical clock in 1682. His later masterpiece, completed in 1690, featured five dials displaying planetary motions and lunar phases. This extraordinary timepiece was later acquired by Queen Mary II and is now housed in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.
His reputation extended to Sir Isaac Newton, for whom he built at least two complex astronomical clocks, further cementing his status as a master of precision engineering.
