Asian Art is featured as a dedicated section in our Fine & Classic auctions, held quarterly throughout the year.
Asian art encompasses a rich and diverse range of artistic styles from across Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East. This vast cultural spectrum includes a wide variety of artworks, each reflecting the unique traditions and histories of their regions.
In recent years, the market has been strongly influenced by the significant sums paid by Chinese collectors to repatriate their historical art heritage. Amid rising prices and the prevalence of sophisticated reproductions, it’s more important than ever to reassess Chinese jades, porcelain, silver, metalwork, and furniture within existing family collections. This trend has led to some remarkable discoveries, including a Qianlong (1736-95) mark and period doucai ‘lotus and bats’ jar and cover, which we sold in 2014 for a record £350,000. This piece had been brought back from China by a Liverpool shipping merchant and was offered by his Shropshire descendant.
While demand for Japanese works of art has not yet reached the highs of the early 1990s, exceptional pieces—particularly the finest Meiji period cloisonné, lacquer, okimono carvings, and Satsuma earthenwares—continue to perform well, despite any overall softness in the market. Our recent results provide clear evidence of this enduring appeal.
