Many items of furniture were bought back by soldiers and sailors who had discovered a corner of the world while in active service. These items appealed to them and they often went to considerable trouble to bring a souvenir back from their far-flung posting during the first and second world wars. Prior to this it was only the wealthy that could afford to travel who also bought back collections from the sub-continent. Today, it is the older items that attract interest; often these items have been kept in British homes for the last hundred years and then - when discovered by experts - cause the biggest surprises. Asian and sub-continental furniture is very highly prized by collectors, very often with the power of the internet these new collectors are from the country of origin.
