TOM DIXON

Born in 1959 in Tunisia, Tom Dixon moved to London with his family in 1963. He enrolled at the Chelsea School of Art, eventually dropping out to play guitar in the band Funkapolitan before teaching himself welding as a hobby so he could work on his motorbike. Dixon started out selling limited editions of his own designs through ‘Space’, a shop set up as a creative outlet and retail space for himself and other young designers. Despite his lack of formal training, he was taken on by Italian company Cappellini and designed probably his best known piece for them, the S chair, a fluid self-supporting shape that became an 80s icon. One of his other best known pieces was the Jack Light, famously described by Tom as a “sitting, stacking, lighting thing”, which he distributed via his own company Eurolounge.

Between 1998 and 2008 Dixon was head of design and later creative director at Habitat, part of the team responsible for rejuvenating the brand. He was also creative director at Artek, the Finnish furniture manufacturer, between 2005 and 2009. He now designs and distributes as Tom Dixon Ltd, and his work is in prominent museums and collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

There’s strong interest in Tom Dixon’s practical yet stylish designs at auction, with the original pieces such as the Star Light, Crown Chair and Pylon Chair from the 1980s and 1990s being popular with collectors. In general, Dixon's earlier work produced through Space and Eurolounge, which encapsulated the mood of the era, is the most sought after and remains a favourite with historians and design fans alike. The value of Tom Dixon’s work varies according to the type of piece, age and condition; please get in touch if you’d like to learn more about a piece you own, or discuss a potential sale or valuation.
