Aksel Holmsen apprenticed under the renowned Norwegian jeweller David Andersen in the late 19th century before establishing his own workshop in 1904. Working from Oslo, Holmsen created a range of striking silver jewellery and objects. Gaining a reputation firstly for fine filigree works, Holmsen later moved into colourful enamelled pieces including brooches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and many more in fabulous foliate designs.
Aksel Holmsen ceased trading in 1971 but the appeal of these bright and bold pieces remains, with pieces continuing to sell well under the hammer. Thimbles, butterfly brooches, needle cases, pepperettes, pendants and suites of jewellery all fetch top prices at auction, particularly those in good condition and with unusual enamelled scenes or colourways.
