Child & Child is a jewellery maker from the turn of the 20th Century that continues to witness exceptional prices at auction. With distinctive colourful, enamelled Art Nouveau designs, and the charming sunflower maker’s mark with a C either side, Child & Child is a firm that produced beautiful jewels from around 1891 until 1915.
Founded in 1880, the firm consisted of a partnership between brothers Walter Child (1840-1930) and Harold Child (1848-1915). A London based firm, the partnership opened at Seville Street in Knightsbridge, and later to 35 Alfred Place West – now Thurloe Street - where their maker’s mark can still be seen adorning the doors today!
Child & Child is most renowned for their exceptional enamel work, typically modelled in silver with peacock, wing, leaf and insect motifs in wonderful turquoise and blue enamels. This beautiful enamel work acclaimed the firm royal patronage and created artistic jewels for fellow Art Nouveau giant Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Child & Child closed their doors in 1916, a year following the death of Harold Child.
A wonderful jewellery firm that produced some exceptional pieces for their few years in manufacturing, Child & Child enamelled jewellery continues to fetch fantastic prices at auction. This maker is incredibly popular with collectors who admire the artistic merits of these pieces, and the ‘high fashion’ of these jewels relative to their time.

The Child & Child maker's mark - featuring a sunflower flanked by two C's. This sunflower had been associated with 17th Century jewellers Child & Co., later a bank who retained the same emblem before its closure in 2022.
The 'WC HC' registered mark within a shield, of course standing for William Child and Harold Child. This mark was registered in 1888 at the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
