E. Gomme / G-Plan

Founded in Victorian England, the G-Plan brand became an iconic and pervasive presence in mid-century British homes and maintains a strong following at auction. We offer a free appraisal service as well as a free collection service for any G Plan items consigned to our modern design auctions.

E. Gomme / G-Plan Overview

Ebenezer Gomme began hand-making furniture in 1898 in the furniture centre of High Wycombe and, like numerous furniture firms, expanded rapidly during WWI after a commission to help produce aircraft for the nascent Royal Flying Corps and again for the RAF in WWII.

Following the Festival of Britain in 1951 Donald Gomme recognised the huge demand for utilitarian but stylish furniture and the relatively small number of firms meeting this call.  Thus G-Plan was born, a range of furniture spanning the needs of an average household but chanelling the style ethos of the day designed to be aspirational but obtainable for the average budget.  Victor Wilkins spearheaded its first offering, the “Brandon Range”, with further selections such as “Fresco” and “Brasilia” now firm favourites among mid-century enthusiasts.

G-Plan proved to be an adaptable brand and reacted to the influx of Scandinavian furniture by hiring Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen to create the “Danish Modern” range.  Although it was eventually sold, the brand retains recognition and at auction it still fulfills its ethos of stylish furniture at affordable prices.

Wilson55 have a good record in selling select E. Gomme and G-Plan furniture at auction with a “Blofeld” swivel chair recently achieving £170 and a “Fresco” sideboard making £280; we welcome enquiries regarding E. Gomme and G-Plan pieces for potential inclusion in our Modern Art & Design Sale held four times a year.
