Peter Layton (1937) is one of the most influential figures in the British studio glass movement, with a career spanning over five decades. Born in 1937, Layton initially trained as a ceramicist before discovering glassblowing during a visit to the United States in the 1960s. He was deeply inspired by the energy and experimentation of the American glass scene, which led him to set up London Glassblowing in 1976 - a glass art gallery now a cornerstone of contemporary glassmaking in the UK.

Peter Layton Overview

Peter Layton's work is instantly recognisable for its expressive use of colour and form. His free-flowing vessels, often inspired by nature, are both painterly and sculptural in their execution. Each piece is individually hand-blown, making it a one-of-a-kind creation.

Over the years, Peter Layton has nurtured generations of emerging glass artists, making his studio not only a creative hub but a centre for education and innovation. His commitment to pushing the boundaries of the medium, while remaining deeply connected to the craft, has earned him both critical acclaim and commercial success. Today, his works are exhibited in major galleries and held in private collections across the globe.

We are currently inviting consignments of Peter Layton's glass for our upcoming Modern and Contemporary Art auctions. Whether you have early studio pieces, collaborative works, or more recent creations, our specialists would be delighted to offer a complimentary valuation. Demand for Layton’s work remains strong among collectors, decorators, and interior designers, making now an excellent time to sell.

Peter Layton’s glass is particularly prized for its collectability. Limited editions and signature series, especially those with vivid colour palettes or rare forms, often attract competitive bidding at auction. From sleek abstract forms to fluid, wave-like silhouettes, his work appeals to buyers who value artistic expression and technical mastery in equal measure. If you're looking to sell, our team can provide expert guidance on positioning your piece to achieve the best possible result.
