Tribal Art

We are pleased to offer a good private collection of African Tribal Art as part of our 13th -14th September Fine Art Sale. This fascinating selection of African art was assembled by our vendor, a Cheshire based Professor, who’s medical research took him to Africa throughout his career. Most of the tribal art was collected by the vendor whilst working in several West African countries particularly in Burkina Faso and Nigeria in the 1970s. The fabulous large Bobo Bwa plank mask from Hounde, Burkina Faso (featured in British Airways adverts!) and the Mossi Yatenga mask were acquired during his residence in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso between 1975 to 1976. 

Frequent field missions over the last 40 years took our vendor to other locations in Africa and this is reflected in other pieces brought back which have now been consigned for sale. The collection of pipes included in a single lot were all acquired directly from villages in central Nigeria particularly from Gwari villages (Kujama, near Kaduna) from 1970-1972. Also featured in the sale is the incredible Juju witch Doctor’s costume. This black and white fabric was donated to the vendor in 1971 during a field visit near Kafanchan, Nigeria a similar to one exhibited in the Royal Academy Africa exhibition of 1996. The Interesting Ethiopian scroll was bought from the central market in Addis Ababa in 1972.
