Liam Spencer has been a leading figure in the Northern art scene since the 1990s. His paintings, often including original works, regularly feature in our dedicated Northern Art auctions each year. We offer a free appraisal service as well as a free collection service for items consigned to these auctions.
Named by critics as one of the rising stars of the contemporary art scene, Liam Spencer was born in Burnley in 1964. He studied at Burnley College and Manchester Polytechnic, and is best known for his studies of city scenes and Manchester’s canals. He came to public attention in 2000 with his exhibition ‘Urban Panoramas’ at the Lowry arts centre in Salford. He’s held many exhibitions since and has been the subject of much media attention including a BBC documentary. Two paintings by Liam Spencer hang in the Manchester Art Gallery alongside works by Adolphe Valette, Camille and Lucien Pisarro and L.S.Lowry. In 2002, he was commissioned to produce paintings of the City of Manchester stadium for the Commonwealth Games.
Liam Spencer is known for his vibrant, Impressionistic style which transforms everyday scenes of shops and streets into strikingly beautiful landscapes. He’s been called ‘the new L.S. Lowry’, but his work is more optimistic and vibrant than Lowry’s. The market for his work remains buoyant, as his subject matter and style appeal to a young, professional market. As with all artwork, the value of Liam Spencer’s paintings varies a little according to the size and subject matter. Spencer’s views of the city at dusk or nighttime reflect his interest in using different lighting conditions to transform a scene, and these paintings are particularly popular among collectors.
His works range enormously in size and we have been privileged at Peter Wilson’s to sell some of the huge urban panoramas of Manchester made for exhibition at The Lowry in 2000. At Peter Wilson’s, our in-house expert Stephen Sparrow has years of experience in assessing and valuing Liam Spencer’s work, so do get in touch if you’d like to learn more about a piece you own, or discuss a potential sale or valuation.
