We hold four dedicated Northern Art auctions each year featuring the work of Reg Gardner. We offer a free appraisal service as well as a free collection service for items consigned to these auctions.
Born in 1948, in Prestwich, Manchester, Gardner’s art works to depict the landscapes that shaped him. At 12 years old, Gardner won his first art competition in the Manchester Evening News, and at 14, he won a scholarship to study art formally at the High School of Art, also in Manchester. Influenced by the Old Masters and Impressionists he would see in public galleries, Gardner’s oeuvre can be characterised by the way that he depicts the urban landscapes of Manchester and Lancashire in the impressionist style. The spontaneity of impressionism is seen in Gardner’s depictions of everyday life, and the use of texture and light give his artworks a nostalgic feel as one realises that his are paintings of memories. Gardner liked to paint from memory because he felt that it gave more power to the role of the artists’ imagination, as he believed that visual constraints were removed.
He exhibited for the first time in 1969 at the Colin Jellicoe Gallery in Manchester, and since then has had sell out one-man shows and continued to exhibit in Manchester and London. At auction, Gardner remains popular within the UK, and has also built up an international market for his original oil paintings.
