We hold four dedicated Northern Art auctions each year that feature the work of Lancashire-born artist Steven Scholes. We offer a free appraisal service for anyone considering consigning items to these auctions.
Lancashire artist Steven Scholes was born in 1952 and it is claimed that he started painting at the age of five. Vivid street scenes continue to be features of his work, as is an enduring interest in the architecture of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Trams and double decker buses on bustling streets of the 1950s and 60s can also be found in many examples of Scholes’s work. His turn to the past for subject matter is reflective of the artist’s passion for local history, and his artistic practice can be seen to be motivated by the desire to capture the local history of Northern cities. It is interesting to note that each of his scenes are set in winter during the evening, more specifically, at 16:05. Scholes was clearly attracted to the subsiding light of this hour as it allowed him to play around with the artificial lights of the city, drawing further attention to the presence of architecture in his work and to his historical passions in this area.
Scholes has had a number of sell-out one-man shows throughout his career, and his paintings often achieve high prices at auction. At Wilson55, our in-house expert Stephen Sparrow has years of experience in assessing and valuing Steven Scholes’s paintings, so do get in touch if you’d like to learn more about a piece you own, or discuss a potential sale or valuation.
