Timor was established in 1923 by watchmakers Mr Bernheim and Mr Luthy. Producing watches from the heart of Switzerland's Jura mountains, Bernheim and Luthy quickly gained a reputation for excellence. With a history of production that is bound to British military service, followed by decades of elegant gold dress watches, and eventually quartz watches from the 1970s, Timor watches encompass the changing times and uses of watches over the 20th century. Concentrating on producing their 'Heritage' range and honouring the brand's history in recent years, Timor continues to produce exemplary timepieces.
The best-selling Timor watches at auction are undoubtedly those with a military history. As well as producing the 'Dirty Dozen' watches for British troops in the 1940s, Timor created a variety of service watches for the army and RAF.
Created for the army and introduced in 1939, the 'Army Trade Pattern' wristwatches sell wonderfully at auction. The precursor to the later 'Watch. Wrist. Waterproof' Dirty Dozen watches that eventually replaced the ATP six years later, these watches are a token of British military history. Engraved to the case back with the military broad arrow, A.T.P monogram and registration number, these watches were produced for wear in combat by British troops. With arabic markers, luminescent dot markers and hands, as well as a subsidiary seconds dial to 6, these manual wind wristwatches are frequently set with a cream dial, although rarer examples can be seen with a black dial. Increasing in value over the last couple of years, these watches are certainly worth selling through our specialist Fine Jewellery & Watch Auctions.
One of the famed and sought-after Dirty Dozen watchmakers, Timor was tasked by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to create timepieces for British troops in World War Two. Together with Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record and Vertex, Timor produced watches that could endure the rigours of the battlefield.
Timor produced 13,000 timepieces of the total 149,500 order for the MoD. Varying slightly in cases, dials and design, the Dirty Dozen watches are characterised by their 'W.W.W' (Watch. Wrist. Waterproof) inscription to case back, broad arrow to dial, black dial, arabic markers, luminous dots and hands within a chrome plated or stainless steel case. A token of social and military history, watch collectors vye to complete the set and therefore these watches are certainly worth selling at auction.
