Thomas Burberry established his company at the age of 21 in 1856. Working from Basingstoke, Burberry's designed garments with the aim to protect people from the Great British weather. Sure enough, Burberry created and patented the 'Gabardine' material which was worn in the Arctic Circle by Dr Fridtjof Nansen in 1893. Moving into the 20th Century, the brand patented the now iconic Burberry Trench Coat, used widely by soldiers in the First World War. The 1920s saw the introduction of the 'Burberry Check' as a lining to all coats, now an instantly recognisable part of the brand. In 1999 Burberry's became Burberry, and in 2019 the brand was taken over by artistic director Ricardo Tisci. Vintage Burberry fashion, bags and accessories are in demand at auction, selling well in our Designer and Fashion Sales.
We hold three Designer & Luxury Sales per year, with Fashion Sales taking place throughout our annual calendar of sales.
