Mulberry is one of the most sought-after designers at auction. Credited to their exceptional, timeless and quintessentially British designs, the brand continues to boast great success both on the new and second-hand markets. Mulberry is the largest manufacturer of leather goods in the UK. Established in 1971, founder Roger Saul was given £500 by his mother to start a belt and choker brand. Saul’s sister designed the now-iconic Mulberry logo, inspired by the Mulberry trees lining the road that Roger had taken on his way to school. Initially designing leather belts, the brand soon grew to include other accessories such as bags and womenswear by 1979. All pieces from the firm encompassed a timeless design, strong heritage, and commitment to quality that have ensured the success of the brand up until the present day.
Roger Saul’s successors, Nicholas Knightly, Stuart Vevers, Emma Hill, and Johnny Coca, have all placed their own stamp on Mulberry as Design and Creative Directors, reinterpreting the brand to chime with modern lifestyles. Current Creative Director Johnny Coca took over in 2015 and was tasked with opening the brand up to the international market whilst retaining its British heritage.
Iconic bags such as the Mulberry Bayswater, Mulberry Alexa, Mulberry Lily, and countless others have ensured the enduring popularity of this brand at auction, with bags in good condition, commercial colours and rare finishes holding their price exceptionally well at auction.
