Fontana Jewellery

Fontana was one of the most famous jewellery houses in Paris in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Pieces by this wonderful French master jeweller are exceptionally sought-after at auction, with only a handful of pieces appearing for sale over the last few years.

Fontana was founded by a Swiss jeweller Thomas Fontana, with their first store front in the Palais Royal in 1840. The firm quickly grew and further stores were opened in Arcades across the city. When Thomas died in 1861, his nephew Joseph Fontana and nephew in law Alexandre Templier who ran the business.

When Thomas’ son Charles came of age, he entered the business in 1867 and assumed management in 1871, re-naming the firm C.H. Fontana et Cie. The firm was renowned for their “classic and rich” (Vever) designs, with a large and loyal client base of Parisian bourgeoisie. In 1881 the company split with Joseph forming Fontana Freres with his brother Giacomo and Charles continuing with the original business. In 1896 the firm moved their headquarters to the Rue Royale, and throughout the early 20th Century exhibited and created exceptional Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces.
