Fairly infrequently seen at auction, Poljot watches certainly grab the attention of discerning watch collectors. Signed to the dial in latin or cyrillic text (Полёт), the history of these Russian watches can be traced back to the 'First State Watch Company' in 1930s Soviet Russia, set up in Moscow under the instructions of Stalin.
In 1964, three years following Yuri Gagarin's first successful crewed space flight, Poljot as a brand was formed, to incorporate timepieces produced by the First Moscow Watch Factory. Poljot continues to sell watches to this day, including a fantastic array of chronograph, skeleton and tourbillon timepieces. In 1966, Sekonda was launched as a sub-brand of Poljot. Sekonda was the UK distributors for Poljot and the name "Sekonda" was chosen to appeal to the British market.
Translating to 'flight' in Russian, Poljot watches are irrevocably linked to the Space Race, and some of their most sought-after watches at auction date from the 1960s-70s. Bright and vibrant chronograph watches from Poljot in good condition sell wonderfully at auction, and very much incapsulate that 'retro' look that modern collectors are after today.
With many - particularly early - examples signed to the dial in cyrillic, these timepieces can elude Western audiences when sorting through their collections. We would recommend to always check with our specialist team of any watches that you are unsure of, and we can advise of potential value.
Poljot watches fare well at auction, with higher prices commanded for retro chronograph watches and early pocket watches. Sleek and classic dress watches, especially with the famed 2209 calibre movements also pique the interest of collectors. As usual, timepieces presented in good condition, together with boxes and paperwork appeal to seasoned as well as newer collectors.
