Zenith is renowned for being a true watch collector's brand, and as such is incredibly sought-after at auction. Famous patrons include none other than Mahatma Gandhi, who owned a silver Zenith alarm pocket watch as one of his few material possessions.
Formed in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot with a goal to produce 'the perfect watch,' Zenith quickly established itself as one of the world's first watch manufacturers. Models to note include the El Primero calibre, launced in 1969 as the first high frequency automatic chronograph movement. Zenith struggled during the 'Quartz crisis' of the 1970s and subsequently took the El Primero calibre out of production in 1975. Thankfully, Charles Vermont compiled all information and technical plans for the El Primero. The model was re-launched ten years later, thanks to the incredible foresight of Vermont.
Zenith was purchased by LVMH in 1999, and still produces their own movements in house. Pieces by Zenith, in particular the El Primero continue to sell brilliantly at auction.
