Ingeborg Ruth Bratman (Austrian, 1935-2015) moved to the UK at only three years old in 1938 with her Jewish family, fleeing Nazi Germany. The Bratmans established a textiles business in Yorkshire - using dyes to colour fabrics. Coming from a textiles background that undoubtedly informed her jewellery design, Ingeborg retrained under Gerda Flockinger in 1965 at the Hornsea School of Art and Sir John Cass College in London. Her jewellery was sold in London, at Mosheh Oved's Bloomsbury shop called Cameo Corner.
Her work is typical for 1960s and later jewellery – bold, experimental and eyecatching. She experiments with textures, proportions, gemstones, shapes and metals. In the 1970s, Ingeborg collaborated with the industrial firm Plessey to create a line of jewels crafted from the industrial, refractive metal tantalum. She anodised this unique jewellery material to create vibrant and bright colours from the blue/grey metal. Two of Ingeborg’s tantalum dress rings dating from the late 70s are in the V&A jewellery collection.
With a fantastic and incredibly varied output - Ingeborg Bratman's jewellery sells incredibly well at auction. Collar necklaces, suites of jewellery, bracelets and gem-set rings all fetch the highest interest from bidders. Gem-set pieces including star sapphires, star rubies, diamonds, emeralds, pearls, and opals attract much attention from keen bidders - as well as hardstones - her pendants set with geode slices and accented with delicate wirework detailing are perenially popular with collectors.
Her gold pieces - including impressive textured collars, or interesting, freeform fancy link necklaces and bracelets also perform exceptionally well - prized for their unique, innovative and one-of-a-kind appeal. Appearing relatively infrequently at auction - less than thirty pieces have appeared at auction in the UK in the last four years - her work continues to sell well.
