Viewing jewellery as "miniature sculpture with a human background," pieces by Lapponia are incredibly distinctive and attract a keen following. Arguably putting Finnish jewellery making on the map in the 1960s, Lapponia set out to create bold, impactful and unique pieces in collaboration with contemporary sculptors, artists and metalsmiths. Incorporated by the jeweller, sculptor and furniture designer Björn Weckström together with entrepreneur Pekka Anttila, Lapponia quickly rose to popularity and reached Hollywood - with the silver Panetoid Valleys necklace adorning Princess Leia's neck in the 1977 Star Wars film.
Fittingly futuristic and out-of-this-world, jewels by Lapponia boast sculptural forms, a range of sometimes unexpected materials and an exquisite craftsmanship. In 2005, Kalevala Koru bought Lapponia, and incorporated the line into Kalevala Jewellery that still produces pieces to this day.
Lapponia jewellery continues to sell well and achieve fantastic results at auction. Pieces that typify the sculptural mission statement of Björn Weckström perform the very best with bidders - cuff bracelets, rings, necklaces, watches, cufflinks, earrings, brooches and suites of jewellery set in silver and gold all draw interest from international bidders.
Larger statement pieces naturally sell wonderfully as one would expect, but earlier pieces from the 1960s-70s, as well as jewels set with famously unexpected stones can also pique the interest of jewellery collectors. Lapponia jewels for sale over the last few years have been set with more conventional gems such as diamonds, pearls, onyx, aquamarine, citrine, opal - but also have appeared set with unique and fascinating materials to include granite, spectrolite and rough zoisite.
